Finding Services

Where do I begin?

NC Department of Health and Human Services

Navigating the service system in North Carolina can be very challenging. Many people do not know where to begin or what supports are available to individuals with intellectual or development disabilities. It is important to know if someone is eligible to receive services. DHHS can provide guidance. In order to apply for services, you will need a current psychological evaluation documenting an intellectual or developmental disability as defined by DHHS. You may learn more about eligibility by visiting their website.

Department of Social Services

Most of the services available in North Carolina are funded by Medicaid. Individuals seeking services will need to find out if they are eligible for Medicaid coverage and have it established in the state of North Carolina in order to receive paid supports. Medicaid is established through the Department of Social Services (DSS) in the county where the individual resides. For information on how to contact your local DSS office, please visit the site.

Vaya Health

In North Carolina, all services (Federal, NC Medicaid, and state-funded) are approved by a Managed Care Organization (MCO). Vaya Health serves as the MCO for individuals living in Western North Carolina. Vaya Health can provide information regarding all service options available within behavioral health care as well as offer contact information to agencies who provide these services. Anyone interested in learning more may visit Vaya’s website or contact Member Services at (800) 962-9003, Monday – Saturday 9:00am-6:00pm.
